Memoir in Creative Writing
Your task is to take one (or both) of the selected highlighted passages from your memoir, and develop the passage into a descriptive composition.
How Long should it be?
This writing will most likely be shorter than your memoir. Most papers will be between 2 and 3 paragraphs.
Your grade will be based on the following:
Final Version – Teacher and Self Evaluation
Revision – Evidence and Quality, Writing Groups
Professionalism – Deadlines w/writing process
Evidence of prewriting
Evidence of multiple drafts with revision
Evidence of editing
***If you are composing on a computer, it is your responsibility to show me how you have revised and edited your memoir. If I do not have multiple physical drafts, you need to document in writing how your memoir changed from draft to draft.***
Length Guidelines: 2 – 3 paragraphs
Development of tone
What is an Exploded moment?
The focus for an exploded moment is description. Here you want to use your power of observation and memory to take your reader inside (and outside) moment.
What should I focus on?
A solid exploded moment creates a (single) dominant impression. Everything points to the impression you want to develop…word choice, figurative language, sentence structure, and tone.
Prewriting February 18th
Draft #1 due February 20th
Final Draft due February 24th
Save all drafts: If you are writing and revising each draft only on a computer, be sure to save each draft as a different file.
After reading a few descriptive mentor texts, spend at least 30 minutes brainstorming with word trees, lists, tone words, and descriptions.
