Are you worried about your first debate? If so, you're not the only one.
Follow this easy six-step process and all will be well.
Step 1: Watch the video below.
Step 2: Remember that this is your first debate. Take it easy, I just want you to experience the format so that we can have a common vocabulary. It's hard to know what debate is without trying it. That is the singular purpose for this first debate round.
Step 3: Check out the rubric below. This is how you will assess your peers and how you will be assessed. Remember, this class is ungraded at this stage, so your effort and openness is the only thing that really matters.
Step 4: Breathe. The longest you will have to address the audience or your opponents is three minutes. We are practicing with a truncated debate format. This means that the evidence that you have, needs to be a few talking points. Don't spend hours and hours doing research. You'll be over prepared if you have 10 pieces of evidence.
Step 5: Take another breath. Get outside this weekend and enjoy yourself.
Step 6: Post any follow up questions below. I'll be checking my blog throughout the weekend.
